When it opened in 1972, the then Uris Theatre was the first large Broadway theater erected since the Earl Carroll in 1931. Designed by set designer Ralph Alswang, it is located at the front of a large office building.
In 1983, during the Tony Awards, the venue was renamed after famed composer George Gershwin.
